Delete your account

Delete your account

You can delete your Viewpoint account and everything tied to it at any time. There are two ways to do it, and you do not need the app installed for the second one.

If you never signed in, there is nothing here to delete: as a guest your spots, photos, maps and plans live only on your device and were never sent to us. Deleting the app removes them.

Option 1 — in the app (immediate)

This is the fastest path and the one we recommend, because it runs the moment you confirm.

  • iPhone / iPad — Settings → Delete account
  • Android — Settings → Delete account

You’ll get a confirmation prompt spelling out what is about to happen. Confirm it and the deletion runs immediately and cannot be undone. The app signs you out as soon as it completes.

Option 2 — from the web, without the app

If you’ve uninstalled the app, lost the device, or simply prefer not to reinstall, email [email protected] with the subject “Delete my Viewpoint account”.

To let us find the right account and prove it’s yours:

  • Send it from the email address on the account. That is how we verify the request. If you signed in with Apple’s Private Relay and can no longer send from the relay address, say so and we’ll agree another way to confirm it’s you — we will never delete an account on an unverified request.
  • Tell us which platform you used (iPhone/iPad, Android, or the web app), if you know.

What happens then: we acknowledge within 48 hours on weekdays, and run the deletion once we’ve verified the request — in practice the same day, and in all cases within 30 days, as GDPR Article 17 requires. You get a confirmation email when it’s done. The deletion we run is the identical server-side operation the in-app button triggers; there is no second, weaker path.

What gets deleted

Deleting the account deletes the account row itself, and the database cascades that across the records that depend on it. It is a real delete, not a deactivation, and it cannot be undone. These go:

  • Your account — profile, email address, and the opaque identifier from Sign in with Apple or Sign in with Google.
  • Every spot you captured, with its notes, composition data and access info, including any you had published publicly.
  • Every photo you captured. The database rows go immediately; the image files themselves are scrubbed from our object storage by a background job, normally within minutes.
  • Every map, shoot plan, route, composition and watchlist, and the condition alerts built on them.
  • Your sessions and device tokens, so no device can keep using the account and no further push notifications can be sent to it.
  • Your subscription and purchase records on our side (see the caveat about billing below).
  • Your support messages as recorded in our database, and the sharing, contribution and moderation-report rows tied to your account.
  • Your analytics history: we send a deletion request to Mixpanel through their GDPR erasure API, which purges your past events upstream. We do this whether or not analytics is currently on.

What is retained, and for how long

We would rather tell you this than let you discover it. If anything here matters to you, say so in your deletion request and we will remove it by hand — ask and it goes.

  • Two kinds of record the automatic delete currently misses. If you ever rated a suggested viewpoint in Find your viewpoint, your rating — including any comment you typed — and your daily usage counter for that feature are stored against your account identifier in a way the cascade does not reach today. We know about this and are fixing it. Until it is fixed, ask in your deletion request and we will delete those rows manually; we will confirm when it is done.

  • The copies on your own device. Deleting the account clears it from our servers and signs the app out; it deliberately leaves the library already stored on your phone in place, so you don’t lose your captures along with the account. Delete the app, or the individual spots, to remove those.
  • Moderation decisions about other people’s content. If your account was ever used to make an editorial decision on a shared map — this applies to almost nobody — the record of that decision is kept, because it documents something done about another person’s content, not about you. Your identifier is removed from it when your account goes.
  • Database backups — roughly two weeks. The backend takes rolling database snapshots for disaster recovery. Your rows can persist inside a snapshot taken before the deletion until that snapshot rotates out, which is on a roughly two-week cycle; an offsite copy kept for disaster recovery may lag that. Backups are never used to serve the product or to restore a deleted account — only to recover from a total failure — and if a restore ever happened, the deletion would be re-applied.
  • Support email and Slack messages. If you emailed support, that correspondence stays in the mailbox, and messages you sent via Talk to Marcos stay in the private Slack channel they were delivered to. Ask us in your deletion request and we’ll remove those too.
  • Billing records held by Apple or Google. Your purchase history belongs to the store that took the payment, and their retention rules — not ours — govern it. We cannot delete it, and neither can you delete it through us.
  • Aggregate, non-identifying counts (for example “how many accounts exist”) that carry no reference back to you.

Deleting your account does not cancel your subscription

These are two separate things, and only the store that bills you can stop the billing. Cancel first, then delete — once the account is gone we cannot help you cancel it.

You cancel from your store’s own subscriptions screen — on iPhone and iPad that’s your Apple ID settings, on Android it’s your Play Store account. Come back here once it’s done. The exact steps live with the store, because they change them:

Cancelling takes effect at the end of the current billing period, and you keep access until then. Refunds are also the store’s — see Terms of service.

  • Privacy policy — what we collect, who we share it with, and your other GDPR rights.
  • Support — anything else that needs a human.
